Cabernet Sauvignon
With 290,000 hectares under cultivation, Cabernet Sauvignon occupies the top spot among the most cultivated grape varieties in the world. It feels at home in almost all climatic regions, which is why it can also be found in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and New Zealand, among other places.
The Cabernet Sauvignon originated from a cross between the Cabernet Franc and the Sauvignon Blanc. Its origin can be found in the late 18th century in Bordeaux, France. At that time, many wineries planted their land with this red grape variety because the red wines vinified with it have a high aging potential.
In the past decades, Cabernet Sauvignon has conquered the whole world. While the New World gives us a completely new, full-fruited, fruity style, Cabernet Sauvignon in Europe is increasingly showing how well it harmonizes with other varieties. In Italy, for example, with Sangiovese or Merlot.
No matter which country the red wines vinified with Cabernet Sauvignon come from, they always retain their distinctive aroma. Black fruity aromas of currants, cassis liqueur and fully ripe blackberries, to green bell pepper and juniper.
The Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety provides color, breed and tannin for red wines with a mostly fruity aroma that can age into some of the longest-lasting and most intriguing red wines around.
