Winemaking

Bàtar is pressed from vines which are more than 30 years old in the municipality of Greve in Chianti. The vineyard is south-facing and characterised by clay, with some sandstone and slate. After selective hand picking, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place in French barriques with regular Bâttonage (lees stirring). Ageing then takes place for 10-12 months in new barriques and some used barriques, followed by six months of maturation in a cement tank.

Our tasting note

Batàr is regarded as one of the best white wines in Tuscany, and is Querciabella's homage to Burgundy. The fine cuvée of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco has a bright, straw yellow hue. The bouquet has ripe, fruity aromas of quince and pear, exotic notes of peach and a hint of roasted hazelnut. On the palate it has wonderful minerality, impressive fullness, a multi-faceted element and complex fruit aromas, and a lingering, intensive aftertaste. Undoubtedly one of Italy's really great white wines.

Querciabella

The Querciabella vineyard, which is located south of Florence, is in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone in the municipality of Greve, and is now one of the most respected wine producers in Tuscany. The vineyard was established in 1974 by Giuseppe Cossia Castiglioni. The company, which is now run by his son Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, consists of around 70 hectares of vineyards. Another vineyard with 32 hectares was also acquired in the picturesque coastal landscape of Maremma in 1997. The operator proudly points out his connection to nature, which is why he has exclusively concentrated on organic, dynamic winemaking since the turn of the millennium.
