Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino – one of the most legendary success stories in Italian viticulture. A true treasure - for winemakers and wine drinkers alike. Along with Barolo and Amarone, it is one of the most famous and precious wines in Italy.

The production area is located in southern Tuscany, about 40 km from Siena and the vineyards are located in a radius of about 5 km in the surroundings of Montalcino. The town truly towers over its vineyards and seems very sleepy. Despite the many tourists interested in wine, Montalcino has remained an agricultural and sleepy town. Even though agriculture takes up only about half of the area, olive groves and grain fields dominate the landscape. And, of course, the vineyards. The comparatively small cultivation area and the commitment to 100% Sangiovese were and are a good basis for the world career of this wine.

Brunello di Montalcino is an almost athletic discipline. And this in great diversity, because each of the approximately 150 producers lives out in his personal style. But they have two things in common: the Sangiovese grape variety and the DOCG law, compliance with which is monitored by the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino.

The Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino stipulates, among other things, that the wine may be sold on January 1, 5 years after the harvest and that until then it must be aged in a wooden barrel for at least 2 years and bottled at least 4 months before sale.

The number of Brunello producers, by the way, does not equate to large quantities or falling prices. Brunello di Montalcino DOP is still one of the most expensive wines in Italy, but also one of the best.

If you've always wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, buy the  2016 vintage. The 2016 vintage is the second great vintage in a row for Brunello di Montalcino after the sensational 2015.
