Winemaking
Contrada Stella comes from a tiny single-vineyard site of just one hectare in Biancavilla, on the southern slopes of Mount Etna. At 820 metres above sea level, it is the highest vineyard parcel of the estate. The name «Stella» (Star) refers to this remarkable altitude. The volcanic soils are deep, mineral-rich and composed of silt, clay and weathered lava rock. Fermentation is followed by 18 months of ageing in large oak casks.
Our tasting note
Bright lemon yellow in colour. The nose opens with an intricate mix of jasmine, violet and white blossom aromas, complemented by citrus fruits, Mediterranean herbs, liquorice and a hint of fresh mint. On the palate, the wine is precise, focused and driven by impressive minerality. Saline notes, flinty nuances and delicate citrus flavours are supported by vibrant acidity. Hints of almond and subtle marzipan add further depth and complexity. Power, elegance and freshness are beautifully balanced, leading to a long, layered and persistent finish.
IDDA
The IDDA estate is a joint venture between the Gaja and Graci families. They own 20 hectares of vineyards situated at altitudes between 600 and 800 meters in the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla. The grape varieties currently cultivated are Nerello Mascalese, Carricante and Grenache. Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, is a mountain formed several hundred thousand years ago by lava eruptions. The Sicilians attribute a feminine nature to Etna, which is why it is called IDDA, meaning "She" in Sicilian.
